Google Maps to Support AR-based Live View

What They Say

Android Police reported that Google is rolling out an app called Live View that will overlay information onto the real world for users in some cities (London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco, and Tokyo)

The change adds a camera icon to the Maps app and when it is used and the camera pointed at a building, information is overlaid such as restaurants, stores, and ATMs. It can show directions to get to the location and users can also access opening hours and online reviews.

Other changes include a “Fast Charge’ filter to show charging points with >50kW output and an accessible places feature to show if a business is wheelchair accessible.

What We Think

I have been surprised at how useful the camera-based guidance is when using Maps for navigation. Adding data on looks like a solid next step and should prove very useful. (BR)
