Google makes AV1 codec support mandatory for Android 14

What They Say

Google has said that it plans to require hardware makers to support the AV1 codec in tablets and smartphones to allow support for Android 14, which is due to be in beta in April 2023. YouTube now re-encodes all of its 4K and 8K videos in AV1 according to Porotocol and Google and Android TV devices have had to have support since last year.

Qualcoomm has still to add hardware encoding so there is an option to support by software.

What We Think

AV1 will further help deliver smaller streams with higher quality. Intel has made quite a lot of the hardware encoding that it can perform with its new GPUs and claims to be able to encode 8K in real time with latency of just 1 second.
