What They Say
The USB Promoter Group announced USB4 Version 2.0 which adds a capacity for up to 80Gbps over active cables and ‘up to 80Gbps’ using existing 40Gbps-rated copper cables and connectors.
Protocol updates are also being made to enable higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort and PCI Express (PCIe) data tunneling to best use the higher available bandwidth.
What We Think
This is good news for faster refreshed high resolution (e.g. 8K) displays. Some years ago, when I met with the USB Promoters at CES, they said that they wanted to be the only interface in town. They really are succeeding.
PD, although I believe it still has one or two ‘quirks’ (I don’t follow it that closely!) is fantastic. I was in the press office at IFA and a friend had forgotten his notebook PSU – I had a different brand but was able to charge him up again. And I can charge my Ipad and my smartphone – oh if only life had always been this simple! He made the very good point that, before long, you would hardly need anything above PD in the power outlets in the upper parts of houses. I agreed, although afterwards I thought that there might be a few electric spot heaters this winter, instead of gas heating! (BR)
