What They Say
The Elec reports that Samsung Display has joined LG Display in developing OLED on silicon microdisplays and that they are both developing LED on silicon technology. The blog reports that SDC is aiming for 10K cd/m² and 3K ppi to supply its parent company in 2024 with OLEDs for VR, while for LED it is aiming for 6K-7K ppi for AR applications.
LG Display has shown prototypes of OLED on silicon at Display Week (although my pictures didn’t come out well enough to be used, sadly!).
What We Think
It was recently reported that Samsung had been asked to enter the supply chain for microOLEDs (Samsung Display asked to develop MicroOLED by customers Apple and Samsung) and it’s no surprise that both companies are developing LED on silicon, although that could mean a number of different things as no technology has yet become established as the best way to do this. Many are trying to establish the winning architecture. (BR)
