What They Say
Intel & Mediatek said that they had formed a partnership for Mediatek’s chips to be made by Intel’s Foundry Services business. The chips will be made for ‘a range of smart edge devices’.
Mediatek said that it sells more than two billion chips per year. It also highlighted that the deal gives the firm more capacity in the US and Europe.
What We Think
I know that this is not really a display story, but it seems significant to me. Gaining business from Mediatek is a big win for Intel’s foundry business, I think. The company clearly knows the supply chain and, no doubt, will have driven a hard bargain to get its name used by Intel.
The comment about geography was interesting and adds to the feeling that, for now, we have reached or passed ‘peak globalisation’. (BR)
