Meta shows its AR/VR work

What They Say

Meta has been talking about what its Reality Labs division is working on. The projects are:

  • “Butterscotch” is a ‘near retina’ display with 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye, but just about 55 pixels per degree and a 55° FOV (compared with around 110° on Quest 2)
  • ‘Starburst’ can support 20K nits of HDR output but is very bulky
  • Holocake 2 is thinner and lighter and uses a combination of holography and pancake lenses to achieve a lighter unit
  • Half Dome is a project that is looking at variable focus optics to get over VA conflict

What We Think

I’m reminded of the time when OLEDs could be bright, efficient, have good colour and long lifetimes, but not all at the same time! (BR)
