What They Say
A group from Carnegie Mellon University that looks at ‘Future Interfaces’ has developed a system that delivers ‘mouth-centred haptics’. The system uses beamed ultrasound to simulate various different sensations in the user’s mouth, tongue and teeth. Sensations such as tapping, pulsing and swiping can be experienced.
There’s a video here showing how the system could be used to simulate a range of effects – including interaction with spiders and their webs!
The researchers found that there was a clear boost in immersion for users.
What We Think
Well it’s not exactly a display, but it is VR-related! The system does seem to use a very large array of ultrasound transmitters.
(Phew, I just managed the awful temptation to talk about how porn drives technology adoption!) (BR)
