What They Say
In a blog post, Sony announced some details of its next (PlayStation VR2) VR headset in a blog post. The firm said that as well as the specification detailed below, the headset will support foveated rendering, eye tracking and six axis inside-out tracking. As expected, the headset uses dual OLEDs with 2000 x 2040 resolution per eye and a 110° FoV. The system connects with a single cable to a PS5.
Sony has an exclusive deal for a game – Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla and Firesprite which is being built specifically for PS VR2. There’s a trailer here (we’ve bookmarked it to where the action starts!).
In its CES talk, the firm said that there would be ‘subtle’ vibrations and feedback in the headset to enhance immersion. The headset will also support HDR, it said.
What We Think
I think this should produce a very good image quality with decent resolution and frame rate combined with the high contrast and good colour of Sony’s microOLEDs. Although I like the idea of VR, the screen door effect and poor image quality always put me off.
Hmmm… I still have a PS3 (for use by my family members), so this might get me to finally upgrade! No pricing or dates were announced. (BR)
