What They Say
The 3it Institute in Berlin has worked with three Fraunhofer Institutes (Fraunhofer Fokus, Fraunhofer HHI and Fraunhofer IIS) to develop hybrid live and online music systems to allow musicians to collaborate while being remote and using very low latency communications so that the delays were equivalent to just a few yards in a concert hall. The broadcast used 360° video so that viewers could choose from where they watched. The event was streamed to a planetarium in Bochum, Germany (about 560km from Berlin).
There is a five minute video in English talking about the project here.
What We Think
During lockdown, I was able to rehearse music online at a distance using free software called Jamulus. It wasn’t the same as ‘being in the room’, but it was surprisingly useful although it took a few sessions to optimise settings and systems. We had delays of up to 40ms or so, and the percussionist struggled to keep the tempo accurate, but it was much better than not playing! (BR)
