Research: Italians families have 5 screens

What They Say

Advance Television reported data from a survey by Auditel-Censis in Italy of over 20K homes that highlighted that in Italy there are around 14.5 million homes (46.6%) with SmartTVs, although only 12.3 million are actually connected.

In total there are 119.4 million screens in homes, up 6.2% on two years ago. The report said that 27.7 million sets (64.2%) are not compatible with the second generation of DTT which uses DVB-T2 with HEVC (H.265).

Although the TV set remains the main device for watching TV, increasingly other screens are also being used individually or in combination with others. In fact, over four million Italians watch linear TV on their smartphones (+6.3%), 2.7 million use their PCs (+41.1%), while 1.2 million watch TV content on tablets.

An estimated 3.5 million Italians download movies from the internet (+33.3%) and over 13 million watch non-linear TV content on on-demand platforms (+38.2%).

Finally, Italians also have over 48 million smartphones (+8.9% on 2019), almost 20 million internet-connected PCs, as well as 7.7 million tablets.

What We Think

As I have often said, you can’t simply extrapolate from a single European country – each is different. Still, the data shows the sheer variety of ways that viewers get video including broadcast TV. (BR)
