Advances in MicroLED to be Presented at the AR/VR Display Forum

MicroLED is a disruptive display technology that promises high brightness and high contrast while keeping power consumption low. These features are particularly relevant for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications to deliver the best visual experience.

Advances in MicroLED manufacturing and commercialization will be presented at the AR/VR Display Forum on November 3-4. This virtual event is organized and hosted by DSCC, the leading analyst firm for the display industry. By using an online platform, participants from different continents will be able to discuss the key challenges for companies across the supply chain.

During the first day, DSCC analysts will present key findings from recently published research reports. Dr Guillaume Chansin, author of the DSCC report on MicroLED, will discuss opportunities for MicroLED and other competing technologies.

On the second day of the event, six invited speakers will discuss the latest developments in MicroLED technology and applications.

Applied Materials – Platinum Sponsor

Nag Patibandla, PhD, VP Advanced Deposition Products, will explain how Applied’s proprietary MicroLED front plane technology incorporates several key innovations such as use of highest extraction efficiency dice of a single wavelength, maintains highest photon extraction efficiency at small die-size, fewest number of mass transfer steps with high yield, and development and use of HVM-scalable manufacturing tools. Applied’s manufacturing process incorporates an innovative pixel architecture that reduces the complexity of sub-pixel repair steps thus affording inherently higher yield, high resolution, high brightness displays.

Coherent – Silver Sponsor

Dr. Oliver Haupt, Director Strategic Marketing, will discuss the use of UV laser to precisely release the MicroLEDs or MicroLED arrays from their wafer. Coherent has developed several laser processes for MicroLED processing like Laser LIFT-Off, Laser Mass Transfer, and Laser repair. Due to the short wavelength, and the perfect optic design single MicroLED´s can be addressed down to a few microns. Precision and high throughput are often contrary to each other and are reasons why conventional LED processing methods fail. This will be overcome by using short UV Excimer lasers. The available high energy can be applied in large fields on the wafer with a corresponding high throughput.

CEA-Leti

Dr. François Templier is Research Director at CEA-LETI, where his research activity is focused on advanced displays, more particularly emissive microdisplays, flexible displays and Thin-Film Transistors. Between 2013 and 2017, he has managed the development of GaN microLED displays. Since 2017, he is Displays Program Manager at the Optics and Photonics Department. He will review the keys challenges to develop high-brightness GaN-based emissive microdisplays and focus on some solutions developed at CEA-LETI to overcome them.

Mojo Vision

Naamah Argaman leads Product Management for Mojo Vision’s display. Mojo Vision has created the world’s first AR smart contact lenses and, in the process, has developed a number of unique, miniaturized technologies, starting with its nanoLED (nLED) display. The extremely small form factor of its contact lens has pushed Mojo to innovate both on the GaN LEDs as well as on the CMOS backplane. The result is a fully integrated symbiotic system that is optimized for brightness, efficiency and power consumption to enable all-day usability. In this talk, we will explore the requirements that led to the birth of Mojo’s order-of-magnitude smaller LED pixels and the challenges that had to be overcome.

Jade Bird Display

Leon Baruah, Director Marketing & Sales, will show that MicroLED displays are becoming the display of choice in AR related applications. The microdisplay and see-through optics are critical components in any AR HMD system and it is crucial that developers take the compatibility of these components into consideration in the early stages of their design.

He will talk about how MicroLED displays work with various see-through optics and conclude the presentation by talking about a few collaborations as examples.

MICLEDI Microdisplays

Dr. Soeren Steudel is co-founder and CTO at MICLEDI Microdisplays BV, a leading fabless semiconductor design and technology company developing unique, high-performance MicroLED displays for the AR market. The technology is based on an innovative combination of III/V materials processing, 3D integration, wafer-level-optics and 300mm Si based processing combined with a proprietary ASIC to provide a self-contained, compact monolithic AR display with high image quality and power efficiency.
