What They Say
The Broadcast Bridge blog reported that it expects TV studios to be a good place for the installation of organic LCDs (OLCDs) because of the flexibility to wrap them around objects in the studio. The article also claims that free form shapes can be created. The article highlights the better performance of dual layer LCDs to provide deep blacks.
What We Think
I must say that although it’s hard to argue with any of the factual basis of this article, I would doubt the potential for OLCD in this application. I suspect the article was provided by Flexenable or Merck, or another company with an interest in the technology. There are tricky issues of colour temperature (the LCDs have to have special backlights to match to studio lighting) which need a lot of work to get right. Further, LCDs inevitably have to have bezels and these are not popular in studio applications. LED makers already have a good business for small pitch LEDs and it’s hard to see a genuine opportunity for OLCD. The clear early opportunity for OLCD looks like automotive to us. (BR)
