VR Coaster, Holodeck VR and MackMedia have announced that the Holodeck platform has been selected to create a new “roam and ride” VR attraction, a combination of free-roaming VR and a thrill ride at Europa-Park in Rust, Germany.
A soft opening for the attraction is scheduled for September 2018. Holodeck VR says its proprietary, patented tracking system offers the highest user throughput in the market. It is capable of tracking more than a hundred objects at a time, from small areas up to stadium-sized spaces, and requires only a fraction of the usual tracking hardware, the company added.
The system uses sensor fusion technology, exclusively licensed from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Nuremberg, optical tracking hardware provided by Advanced Realtime Tracking, and onboard inertial measurement units to create a platform for high-volume free-roaming VR attractions. Since the launch of the world’s first virtual reality rollercoaster in September 2015, Europa-Park has been continuously extending its VR offering on the Alpenexpress rollercoaster, where visitors can choose from five different experiences.
The refurbished Eurosat rollercoaster, themed around the movie “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”, offers two different experiences. Visitors choosing to ride without VR embark on a journey through 19th-century Paris. There will be a separate coaster station for VR riders.
