Since its launch on 29th March, the German DVB-T2/HEVC platform has reached 2.2 million households. Some 1.7 million households have opted for Freenet TV, an encrypted commercial TV channel package, and a further 500,000 to 600,000 households receive the unencrypted, mainly public TV channels.
Kantar TNS conducted the research among around 2,400 consumers last month, on behalf of Freenet TV platform operator Media Broadcast. Customers are reported to be pleased with the picture quality and the majority want to continue using Freenet TV after the expiration of the free-of-charge period and will pay the $6.25 monthly fee from July.
Of the original consumers of the DVB-T service, 18% stopped using terrestrial TV altogether. However, more than 400,000 households changed from other TV services to DVB-T2 and Freenet TV, and 9% are planning to move to the new DTT standard in the next weeks.
Around 1.4 million households are still undecided on what to switch to, or live in regions in which the terrestrial TV coverage will be converted from DVB-T to DVB-T2 in the next months.
