UK Likes Subscription Services

Zuora has reported data from a YouGov poll conducted in the UK for itself, a finance solutions provider, that supports the notion of increased interest in streaming video by younger demographics. 43% of respondents of subscribers to SVOD (such as Netflix and Amaxon) rarely watch linear TV (and that means 12% of the UK population). The research shows that the percentage from the 25-34 demographic is 58%.

16-24 year olds are also twice as likely to subscribe to SVOD compared to traditional cable or satellite services. Subscribers of SVoD (37%) also liked the fact that cloud-based content saved space in their homes compared to storing media.

The report look at other areas that can be re-configured to become subscription services, including home security, self-driving cars, smart healthcare/monitoring and connected city services. The report says that 12% of disposable income now gets spent on subscription services.

Analyst Comment

The large share of younger people that prefer SVoD is not interested in cable or satellite services as these are typically related to particular household addresses and people at this time of their life may well be moving around more (or switching between the family home and university). (BR)
