Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) has increased its research and development budget for the year by 16% to an all time high of $2.2 billion. Last year the company spent $1.9 billion on R&D, rolling out 210 technologies for 8,800 products, according to TSMC’s co-CEO, Wei Che-chia. The funds will be spent on new technologies as well as increasing capacity. TSMC is scheduled to start mass production of 10nm and 16nm chips in the second half of this year.
