Sony Invests in Lasers

Laser projection is a big part of what Sony does in the B2B space these days; 40% of the company’s B2B range uses a laser light source. Business director Damien Weissenburger also said that Sony now holds a 65% market share in the UltraHD (and higher) laser market.

The VPL-FHZ65 and VPL-FHZ60 are extensions to Sony’s laser projectors, expanding coverage to 6,000 and 5,000 lumens, respectively. They are both 3LCD models with 1920 x 1200 resolution; powered zoom (1.6x), focus and lens shift (+/-65% vertical, +/-32% horizontal); and a 1.39 – 2.21:1 throw ratio.

Both new projectors can throw a 40″ – 600″ image and have +/-30° horizontal and vertical keystone correction. They feature HDMI, DVI-D, HDBaseT, BNC, component, RS232 and RJ45 connections. Measurements are 460 x 515 x 169mm.

Sony will launch the VPL-FHZ65 at the start of the summer to catch the education market, with the VPL-FHZ60 arriving by the end of the year. Lamp-based models (VPL-FH65 and VPL-FH60) will be launched alongside the laser projectors.

The projector boasts DCI-4k resolution, 2,000 lumens of brightness, an ultra-short throw ratio and four HDMI inputs, supporting UltraHD at 60fps. It is capable of throwing a 66″ – 147″ image and boasts edge-blending functionality.

How will Sony handle content for its newest high-resolution displays? Behold the PMW-PZ1, an UltraHD media player due to be released in March (although press materials said June). The unit can accept content via USB or an Express (SD) card and features HDMI outputs supporting UltraHD at 60fps. Formats including XAVC and MPEG422 are supported. Sony will launch the unit for €1,650 ex VAT.

Finally, there was a demonstration of the newest version of Sony’s Vision Presenter software. The newest update adds screen mirroring functionality.
