What They Say
The 8K Association (and Samsung) said that the association has “adopted broader performance requirements applied to 8K TVs”. It also said that it had upgraded the spec to cover a ” broader set of video decoding standards” and “advanced multi-dimensional surround sound formats”,
What We Think
When the 8K Association put out its logo programme, we didn’t think much of it as it didn’t publish the specification. Giving them the benefit of the doubt we assumed that there were some technical details to resolve. However, when this ‘update’ arrived we checked again and it seems that it is the policy of the Association that the specification is for ‘members only’. Pah!
There are some organisations that probably have enough credibility to publish a logo and say ‘just trust us’ when asked what it means and how it is measured. However, given that according to LG, when the 8K logo was first available, Samsung, one of the main proponents of the logo didn’t seem to be able to meet 8K using the ICDM measurement criteria and given Samsung’s past history of fudging both energy tests and industry terminology, I for one am not ready to give them ‘carte blanche’.
Last year, the association said “A compliance test set will be developed next by 8K Association members, thus enabling a transparent testing process”. The current situation is not very transparent by my reckoning.
When will companies realise that in these days of ‘fake news’ and misinformation, saying ‘just trust’ are long gone? As for what the logo means or why you should give the new one any more credence than the last version, I have no idea. (BR)
