Subscription VOD in W Europe Booming

According to a report from IHS Markit, subscriptions to video on demand (SVOD) in Western Europe exceeded €2 billion in 2015, and are expected to top €3 billion this year. YoY growth is forecast to slow over the following four years, but SVOD will still generate most in terms of home video spending, contributing 49% (€4.2 billion) in 2018 and 58% (€5.2 billion) in 2020.

The more affluent Nordic countries spent far more on average per household than the larger markets, with Norway’s €89.46 dwarfing Germany’s €6.06. Norway has 2.1 million broadband households compared to Germany’s 26.9 million. By 2020 Norwegian spending will be at the same level as that of Spain and Italy, both of which have four times the number of broadband households.

The UK will bring in €1 billion by the end of 2017, with a steady 35% of the total market until 2020.
