What They Say
Xperi said that it had bought Vewd for $109 million. Vewd software is used in more than 30 million connected TVs per year. The transaction will give Xperi access to an installed European footprint of approximately 15 million devices that can be enabled for monetization, including activation of TiVo+, a free ad-supported TV service. (Xperi merged with Tivo in 2020)
Vewd was Opera TV before a change of name in 2017.
What We Think
The Vewd and Tivo combination looks like a good one to me. Vewd was in some trouble and filed for a ‘pre-packaged’ bankruptcy at the end of last year. (Links Week Commencing 20th December 2021). At the time, the CEO said “Our future owners have demonstrated a clear commitment to our Company’s long-term success” or to put it another way – “will be looking to turn the debt it has just converted to equity back to cash as soon as they can”. Continued consolidation in the field of TV operating systems seems likely. (BR)
