What They Say
HDTVTest’s Vincent Teoh had a look at the Xgimi Aura 0.47″ DMD-based 2400 Ansi Lumens (1600 when calibrated) UST projector using LP technology. P3 coverage is 83% and 64% of Rec. 2020. We carried the press release that announced the projector (Xgimi’s New Aura 4k UST Laser Projector Shows Why Your Next TV Isn’t Going To Be A TV).
Out of the box, the image is too much to the blue unless adjusted. There is a fixed 2.2 gamma but with linear tracking. There is some 3:2 judder, but there are some artefacts in the motion compensation and there are also some de-interlacing artefacts.
In HDR, mid-tones were too bright and tone-mapping was not as sophisticated as the best TVs and getting good HDR needed ‘a lot of faffing around’ when switching from SDR to HDR, making SDR the better choice. (although, as he says, HDR is a challenge in projection, anyway)
Input lag was around 45ms for gaming, and the set inputs 120Hz content, but Teoh believes the set simply drops frames to map to the 60Hz display engine.
There are smart features using Android, but the Netflix app didn’t work correctly.
What We Think
Hmmm… this is clearly not a set for the home cinema enthusiast, so I guess it is just aimed at those that want a big picture at a good price. To be fair, the sets sells today in the US for $2,250, which is pretty good value. It is only about 5% more than that in the UK (before tax) which is very good value. (BR)
