Well Football Didn’t Come Home….

What They Say

IBC.org published an interesting article on the TV cameras and technology used to cover the Euro Soccer tournament over the last month. Each venue had at least eight native UltraHD cameras out of a minimum of 36 cameras including some running at 300 fps and two at 600fps.

What We Think

Unfortunately, my national team was beaten in the final after a penalty shoot-out – a national tradition. However, Italy were the better team over the game, so justice was probably done. I hadn’t realised that there was so much attention to the use of high speed cameras. I often wondered about video refereeing (VAR) decisions as I had assumed that the cameras were at 50P. In a fiftieth of a second, a player could move quite a lot, but in 1.6ms (600 fps) not so much! I’m also irritated that I didn’t bother to check if the match was also being broadcast by BT Sport in UltraHD, The BBC and ITV both showed it, but neither has an UltraHD broadcast channel. It seems that the BBC did stream the match in UltraHD on the iPlayer, but I missed that offer! I just checked the replay on the iPlayer but it’s not in UltraHD and there are visible compression artefacts, despite my 600+Mbps connection. Good FullHD was probably a better option! (BR)
