What They Say
Developer of 360° video technology company, TiledMedia, published an interesting blog post on changes in the testing of VR in sport between the Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Olympics. The blog highlighted the big difference that capturing in 8K made compared to 4K in Tokyo. Rob Koenen highlighted that even though the final resolution was limited by the display, the higher quality capture meant much less distortion and error in all the processing steps before the display. He even found that very tricky events such as ice hockey were watchable enjoyably.
The author concludes that 8K is more important to the experience than stereo output, although this may change as stereoscopic production matures. He also preferred a 180° feed (at 8K) to a 360° feed (also at 8K), although better cameras made the 360° noticeably better.
The blog includes details of how interested viewers can watch the content in the US or China. He also linked to a ‘sneak peek’ at a new high quality 360° camera coming from Meta.
What We Think
We reached out to the author to get permission to republish the article, but for unidentified reasons, he was unable to do that with this particular article. (We have published blogs from the firm before). I could make a (very educated) guess at those reasons, but you’ll have to buy me a beer at Display Week if you want to hear my speculation!
The article is definitely worth a read if you are interested in either the VR side of things, or the development of 8K. (BR)
