VR Panel Shipments to Reach 15.8M Units in 2022

What They Say

DSCC published an interesting forecast for VR devices and said that 15.8 million panels will be used in VR headsets this year – with over 80% of the demand coming from Meta. Highlights will be:

  • Sony launching PlayStation VR2 with over 800ppi using an AMOLED. The development of that level is because of the volume Sony can deliver
  • OLED on silicon will grow partly because DSCC believes Apple will use it, despite its delays. A Chinese start-up, Arpara, will also use the technology.
  • There is a shift from single to double panel headsets.
  • While shipments of VR headsets will grow at a CAGR of 34%, panel shipments will increase at a CAGR of 50%.
  • Annual revenues for AR/VR displays will reach $9.3B in 2027. VR and passthrough AR will remain the biggest segment. (Chart on the blog)

What We Think

I hadn’t thought about the impact of moving from monocular devices to stereo on the numbers! Doh! The panel shipments by configuration is a new one to me, and looks useful. (BR)
