In the UK, cable company Virgin Media has announced a new user interface and STB (V6) that is based on the hardware platform of Liberty Global, which owns the firm. As we reported in our IBC report, the box is based on TiVO software and will record up to six programmes simultaneously while another is watched live as well as allowing access by devices around the home.
The company has also shown the “TellyTablet”, a 14.1″ tablet that runs Android (Marshmallow) to provide a remote viewing experience. Full details are still to be revealed, but is said to have a FullHD IPS LCD display, four speakers, 3GB of memory, 32GB of storage (and a MicroSD slot). There are USB ports and a claimed battery life of 7-8 hours. It’s based on a Mediatek chip and has a 12050mAH battery. There is a front 5mp camera. The tablet will cost £299 ($313 + tax) or can be bought on a monthly contract.
