V-Nova LCEVC Licensing Will Be Free for Chipmakers

What They Say

We’ve run it as a press release (V-Nova LCEVC Licensing Terms Announced, but we thought it was highlighting that V-Nova has announced that its LCEVC licence is free for companies that want to use it in devices, chipsets, browser and encoder/players. The licensing will be based on licenses to service providers on a per-user basis (from $0.01 to $0.12 per year) and capped at $3.7 million.

What We Think

The LCEVC technology allows lower bitrates by up to 40% when used with existing codecs. V-Nova’s idea is that service providers will reduce their cost of delivering better video quality and so that’s the best place to put the cost of the technology. Chip makers and software firms will be able to licence the technology without cost. (BR)
