What They Say
Unilumin said it has now put phase 2 of its Huizhou, Guangdong, China, LED display plant which now covers over 300,000 m² – or around 45 football (soccer) pitches. The firm said that it is the largest in the world and will make a contribution to resolving supply capacity restraints for small pitch (e.g. 0.7mm/0.9mm) LED displays. What We Think
This is an impressive looking facility. In digging around about it, I spotted that the firm has now been registered with the appropriate Chinese authorities for the supply of DCI cinema LED systems. I missed this when it was announced in June. Building a business for cinema LED is going to be challenging. While the change to digital was funded, effectively, by huge savings in print making and distribution, there is not much of an edge for LED in the cinema. The only real opportunity is to sell more tickets or sell tickets at a higher price. Covid has not made that easier. I went to the cinema last week for the first time for a couple of years. Despite the well promoted film, ‘The Many Saints of Newark’, there were only a dozen people there at peak time on a mid-week evening. (BR)
