According to new research by Eutelsat, the number of Ultra HD channels has grown 26% in the past six months, as reported by Digital TV Europe. That brings the total number of UHD channels to 125—52 DTH satellite channels and 71 via cable or IPTV, as well as two DTT channels in South Korea. Eutelsat’s director of global market research and customer experience, Claudia Vaccarone, called the growth “really impressive”.
“Ultra HD is well ingrained—it’s no longer a matter of if, but it’s more like a matter of when it’s going to become a de facto standard. We, especially in the Western world, consider HD now to be the de facto standard but it’s actually still only a little over a quarter of the number of channels that are available worldwide.
My main message for UHD is it’s slowly but surely getting there. There’s a traction which is happening. It’s going to take some time but there’s no doubt about it”.
According to Eutelsat data, a surprisingly low 27% of channels worldwide are HD.
