UBI Research said that it expects revenues of $58.7 billion for displays for AR and VR headsets by 2021. That will be a lot of growth as it forecasts revenues of just $3.9 billion this year. The company expects OLED to dominate the segments, although at the moment, the technology is only just over half of the market.
Analyst Comment
OLED obviously has the advantages of weight, thickness and speed as advantages. In VR, brightness is not a challenge because of the closed headsets. However, for AR, the need to compete with ambient light will probably mean that other technologies, such as microLED, will have significant advantages. (BR)
