TV-makers Seek New Angles to Remain Competitive

Protocol Entertainment looked at functions that TVs could perform beyond simply streaming TV content and reported that Samsung had said that viewers of its advertising supported TV Plus service have watched close to 3 billion hours of content over the past year, double the previous year.

The article suggests that TV makers need a new ‘Killer App’ and suggests cloud gaming, fitness and home control as well as becoming the ‘information hub’ for the house.

What We Think

I feel a Display Daily coming on…. The whole idea of a ‘killer app’ is, understandably, very appealing, but it is, I think, the flexibility of the IT systems that modern TVs are that make them useful – as it does with smartphones. (BR)
