What They Say
Optics.org reported that at the Photonics West last week, JBD said that it has teamed up with Tooz Technologies and made a public demo using RGB 0.13″ panels in a 5mm cube. (Zeiss and Deutsche Telekom Join Forces on Smart Glass Platform and Zeiss and Deutsche Telekom launch tooz DevKit smart glasses in Germany). The projector has a total volume of 0.72 cubic centimeters. The JBD module is then attached to the curved waveguide lens by Tooz.
“With several high-precision, free-form surfaces, the lens guides the light from the x-cube to the wearer’s eye without the need for any additional separate optical elements”, explained the two firms. The latest design has reduced power consumption and the decrease in power consumption is said to allow for all-day usage of the smartglasses. The glasses allow the use of prescription lenses.
There is a video here on the glasses and one from JBD here.
What We Think
These glasses do seem to be much more like traditional designs, although still a bit heavier. Crucially, these glasses do not include a camera. Given the huge importance put on privacy and security in Germany, it’s not surprising to see a product developed there without them. (BR)
