The Black Hole of Apple Vision Pro’s Microdisplays

What Display Daily thinks: The news that LG is not going to start on OLEDos production this year follows a bunch of stories about how Samsung and LG were vying for Apple’s microdisplay business against Sony, and Sony selling its microdisplays at about a $1,000.

Follow the money, as they say. There isn’t much going in the direction of the Vision Pro and if there is, feel free to let me know. Just ask the simple questions: the microdisplay is pretty much the be all and end all of any MR headset so, is there any enthusiasm to supply Apple with these displays? Why is it that manufacturers with the means are not clambering over each other to get Apple’s business and curry favor when, in fact, they seem to be retreating?

Apple may have singlehandedly both energized and decimated the AR/VR/MR display business all at the same time.

While the company acknowledged the need for an OLEDoS production facility, with potential costs nearing 200 billion won ($150 million), LG Display has chosen to concentrate on continued research. LG Display has also experienced a series of underwhelming earnings in the past few quarters, potentially influencing their decision.
