The proposed acquisition by Spain’s Telefonica of pay-TV company Digital+ (known as Canal+ in Spain) is to be investigated by the Spanish competition authority, the CNMC. In a statement, the CNMC was quoted as saying that the deal “could significantly hinder competition in the markets related to pay-TV, audiovisual content and electronic communications services”.
In May, Telefonica entered a €725 million bid for a controlling 56% stake in Digital+’s holding company, Distribuidora de Televisión Digital (DTS) (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 19). Telefonica already holds a 22% stake in DTS.
