What They Say
TCL has made 8K TVs more affordable, by bringing 8K panels to its 6-Series TVs, with 65″ now available for pre-order in the US at $2,199 and 75″ at $2,999. That compares to $3,000 for the cheapest Samsung 8K 65″ model. The sets have QDs for WCG and miniLED BLUs. The set has a higher quality remote, but still runs the Roku OS and supports Dolby Vision and Atmos audio.
What We Think
As David Barnes used to say “For LCD makers, pixels are free” so inevitably prices of 8K will fall. I have trouble telling UltraHD from scaled content at UltraHD resolution at my normal viewing distance, so I certainly wouldn’t trade the contrast of my OLED for one of these sets. However, I can imagine plenty of consumers buying this kind of set. Bigger numbers always seem to be better and TV buyers don’t typically look at sets from their normal viewing distance. They will often get up close to “See how good it is”, and then the 8K difference will be apparent. (BR)
