What They Say
TCL has shown a prototype of an unrolling OLED TV, but unlike the LG rollable TV, it unrolls horizontally rather than vertically.
What We Think
This kind of concept does get rid of the ‘black hole on the wall’, a topic I have covered many times. The Black Hole on the Wall. TV is decoration as well as having a functional purpose and nobody that I know likes the sight of a TV when it’s off. That’s why there have been so many attempts to hide or disguise the function. Panasonic has shown a transparent TV that got lots of attention at CES and IFA a couple of years ago. It seems to me that the TCL concept should be easier than the LG approach, but it doesn’t disappear completely when powered down, which is a disadvantage compared to the way that the LG on hides itself.
Watch out for Ken’s Display Daily on 5th November on the TCL topic. (BR)
