System Plugs Looks (Very) Closely at Apple miniLED BLU

What They Say

System Plus (SP) in France, part of the Yole Développement group, released information about the miniLED backlight in the 12.9″ iPad Pro after a teardown with support from Yole analysts. The system includes:

  • 10,384 miniLEDs in 2,596 zones. The miniLEDs are GaN-based dies on patterned sapphire substrate, have an engineered light-emission pattern using dedicated top and back dielectric reflectors. SP believes that they are manufactured by Epistar in Taiwan.
  • The chip-on-board assembly of the more than 10,000 miniLEDS is believed to be done by TSMT in Taiwan. The miniLEDs are mounted in flip-chip configuration.
  • The miniLEDS are driven by nine drivers from STMicroelectronics. These drivers are wafer-level chip-scale packaged.

The firm’s report includes a costing analysis, but details were not disclosed.

What We Think

I love the SEM image of the miniLED. (BR)
