Strong Growth in OLED Panel Shipments for Laptops Predicted

According to Omdia, the shipment of OLED panels for laptops and tablets is predicted to surpass 10 million pieces, reaching 12.9 million pieces in 2023. The shipment includes 7.7 million pieces for laptops and 5.2 million pieces for tablet computers, with a projected OLED penetration rate of 14% by 2028.

While LCDs have traditionally dominated the field of laptop display applications, OLED displays are gradually gaining acceptance, especially in the high-end laptop segments, due to its thinner and lighter form factor and display brightness. Several laptop brands, including Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, Huawei Matebook, Xiaomi, MSI, Acer, Gigabyte, and BBK, have adopted OLED displays for their high-end or flagship laptops, primarily in the consumer gaming and high-end business segments. Samsung Display and Everdisplay are the major OLED display makers for laptops, while Sharp, BOE, LG Display, and CSOT are all shipping prototypes or pilot production panels. Apple has not committed to a timeline for OLED laptops which may suggest that the company is waiting until it feels production quality meets its standards, but it may already be planning to lay out a roadmap in the second half of this year.

Omdia has created a roadmap for Apple’s projected roadmap. The references to OLED for the iPad and MacBook are for hybrid OLED displays, and the company is suggesting that a 20-inch iPad will have a foldable OLED display by 2026.
