As part of the announcement of its finance results, STMicroelectronics has said that it will discontinue the development of new STB platforms and standard products for STBs and home gateways. As the reason for its decision, the company pointed to ‘the slower-than-expected market adoption of leading-edge products’ and rising competition in the low-end of the market. These factors, combined with high R&D costs, have led STMicro’s STB business to generate ‘significant’ losses in recent years.
