What They Say
Sony announced three new smartphones highlighting the firm’s technology in cameras and imaging.
In the Xperia 1 III there are four focal lengths available from three cameras, and the ‘periscope’ camera can support 70mm and 105mm (35 mm equivalent) focal lengths. The cameras have high speed autofocus and up to 20fps of capture and they can provide RAW images. The display is a 6.5″ unit with 1644 x 3840 resolution and Gorilla Glass 6 which can support up to 120Hz in the OLED and up to 240 Hz motion imaging, while touch is also captured at 240Hz. Video can be recorded up to 120fps. HDR is supported and a ‘Hollywood Color Experience’ and eight ‘colour looks’ for video capture.
There’s a ‘low gamma raiser’ to light shadow areas when gaming. The processor is an 888 5G chip from Qualcomm and the battery is 4,500mAh (as are all the Xperia III models)
The Xperia 5 III 5G is smaller and has a 6.1″ 1080 x 2520 resolution display and again has the 888 5G.
The Xperia 10 III is lower priced (although details were not given) has the Snapdragon S690 processor and a 6.0″ 1080 x 2520 resolution display.
What We Think
We haven’t got Sony’s full year financial numbers yet, as its year runs to the end of March, but last summer the company said that it expected the smartphone business to make money over the year. For the moment, anyway, Sony has not yet been forced to follow LG out of the business. The Sony brand is still stronger than LG and its strong positioning in imaging must be helping it to get some premium. (BR)
