Sony Unveils duo of ‘ground-breakingly affordable’ 4K laser projectors

What They Say

Sony has a couple of new ‘serious’ home projectors based on laser light sources. The VPL-XW7000ES (£15,000) and VPL-XW5000ES (£/$6,000) are both said to have light source lives of 20K hours and both use new 0.61″ SXRD imaging chips that have native UltraHD resolution. Both also use Sony’s top end X1 Ultimate processor which includes a Dynamic HDR Enhancer which processes the images to boost HDR performance. The projectors have 95% of the DCI-P3 gamut.

For gaming, the devices support UltraHD at 60fps (with 21ms lag) or FullHD at 120 fps (with 13ms lag) through HDMI 18Gbps ports. There is no VRR.

The XW5000ES has peak brightness of 2,000 Ansi lumens and a manual lens with a throw ratio of 1:1.38 to 2.21. The XW7000ES goes up to 3,200 Ansi lumens and has a motorised lens with a throw ratio of 1:1.35-2.84 and a Lens Memory function.

What We Think
