Sony to launch PS5 for $499, teeing up fight with Microsoft

What They Say

The Sony PS5 is due to ship in Japan and the US on November 12th and sell for $499. Other countries will start to receive them on the 19th. There will be a $399 ‘Digital Edition’ of the unit as well. The company will go ‘head to head’ on pricing with Microsoft, although Microsoft will have a version $100 cheaper than the cheapest Sony. Sony will have a new games service to compete with the Microsoft Game Pass.

What We Think

Over the last couple of years, there has been more and more interest from consumers in getting TVs, or even TV-sized monitors that can be used for gaming. With these new generations of console, better display driving with higher resolutions and frame rates should push the performance of TVs. TV makers could well benefit from console buyers deciding to upgrade early to get the best out of their consoles – if they haven’t spent all their money on games! Nintendo has also done well this year with the boost in gaming. (Nintendo hits record as world plays games during pandemic lockdown) (BR)
