What They Say
As part of its Technology Day. Sony’s R&D Division showed the video below which highlights an AR/VR headset that has been developed using dual UltraHD OLED microdisplays (4000ppi). The headset is clearly an R&D project. As detailed in the video, the technology uses WOLED technology and packaging from Sony’s sensor division.
The headset is said to have latency of around 10ms using latency compensation and combining sensor inputs.
Applications include engineering and medicine as well as games and videos as well as live entertainment. Remote collaboration is also being developed.
What We Think
This certainly adds weight to the stories that Apple is planning to use dual UHD displays in a headset. It’s a while since I’ve discussed the topic with industry players, but in the past, Sony has been widely credited as easily the best of the makers of microdisplays in terms of image quality. Although this is an R&D project, by the time you can make one of these microdisplays, you shouldn’t be far of making many. (BR)
