Sony’s Next-gen VR Headset Will Use Samsung OLEDs

What They Say

Bloomberg published an interesting article based on discussions with JDI that included a forecast from Omdia on the increasing penetration of LCD into the VR headset market as OLED makers focus on the higher volumes available in the smartphone market. The article also reports that Sony plans to use OLEDs, with 2000 x 2040 per eye resolution from Samsung for the next generation of the PlayStation VR headset. Other features will include:

  • Foveated rendering support
  • USB-C tethering to the PS5 and orb-shaped controllers.

Omdia’s forecast for LCD domination is because of better economics and JDI sees itself as having real advantages in high ppi LCDs.

What We Think

For a moment, I was surprised to see this report as Sony has a strong reputation for making its own OLED microdisplays for AR applications, but, of course, these displays would be too big to use microdisplay technology (with a CMOS backplane). Assuming that Omdia was aware of this move by Sony, it looks as though pretty well all of its forecast would be Sony units. If not, I would expect a revised forecast to add more OLED share.

JDI is looking for good and growing markets as it reinvents itself. (BR)
