Sony’s Dolby Vision Update Coming to Europe Next Month

The Dolby Vision firmware update for select Sony Smart TVs is heading to Europe, despite a rocky start with its US roll-out. The update arrived in the US a couple of months ago, but was initially restricted to streaming apps. It later transpired that Sony’s Dolby Vision implementation uses a specific profile that requires more processing to be done by the player, rather than the TV. Manufacturers were then required to deliver individual updates for each of their Dolby Vision-capable devices to get them to play nice with Sony TVs. Sony’s A1 OLED series will receive the Dolby Vision update.

The company said, “Selected Sony TVs (ZD9, XE94, XE93 and A1 Series) will support Dolby Vision, with the software update to be rolled out in Europe in April 2018. To enjoy Dolby Vision content, the video streaming app/service must support Dolby Vision. In addition, after the Sony TV receives the software update, devices with Dolby Vision playback (such streaming media players and UHD Blu-ray players) that are connected to the Sony TV by HDMI will also require a software update to support Dolby Vision playback through the device. For more information on the timing of an update to a particular player, please contact the player’s manufacturer”.

The update will also come to older models, bringing a range of bug fixes and performance tweaks but not support for Dolby Vision.
