Sony Removes YouTube App From Older TVs

Sony has announced that they will remove the YouTube app on Sony internet-enabled 2012 TVs following changes by YouTube that can’t be supported by the TV’s hardware. YouTube switched from using the Flash Player to an HTML5-based video player last year. Sony will remove the app on 30th September 2016.

This highlights the difficulty of developing Smart TVs that keep their ‘smarts’ for the lifetime of the TV set when the digital world moves so rapidly. One approach, from Samsung, was to offer upgrades for the intelligence of the set, but the company has stopped doing that now – I suspect very small sales. (BR)
