Sony: PS5 to gain HDMI 2.1 VRR support with future update

What They Say

Sony has said that the PS5 will support Variable Refresh Rates (VRR) as set out in HDMI 2.1 in the future with a firmware upgrade. At launch, it supports 4K120 performance, although there have been some practical issues in implementation.

What We Think

As we pointed out in the article yesterday, the lack of clarity and labelling on HDMI makes it really hard to ensure that signals are supported not only by source devices (such as PlayStations) and sink devices (such as TVs), but also by devices in-between such as receivers. Sony has also been criticised by a few for not supporting 1440p on the console (although we don’t know of any TVs using that resolution) and for not enabling 120Hz on older games (whereas Microsoft’s new XBox can run older games at 120Hz).
