What They Say
Sony Pro announced two new Native DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) SXRD-based projectors. The new VPL-VW890ES model and VPL-VW290ES model will replace the VPL-VW870ES and VPL-VW270ES respectively. Both have the Sony X1 processor and Super Resolution Reality Creation for upscaling.
The lower cost VPL-VW290ES has 1,500 lumens (Ansi not specified) and with three 0.74″ panels has the same level of CLO. It uses a lamp as the light source which is rated for 6,000 hours. There are three HDMI inputs as well as trigger/RS.232C, LAND and IR along with a single USB port. Power consumption is 390W (with 26dB noise). The lens has a throw ratio of 1.38:1 to 2.83:1 (2.06:1 zoom) and has powered zoom and vertical and horizontal lens shift (Vertical: +85% -80% Horizontal: +/-31%)
The projector has Sony’s Dynamic HDR Enhancer processor.
The VPL-VW890ES is a significant upgrade to the lower model (at least in price!). The light source is ‘Z-Phosphor laser’ with 20K hours life. It has 2,200 lumens of output. There is a bundled lens but also an optional lens. There is an All-Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens. This large-aperture lens adopts an all-glass design for its 18 elements, including six extra low-dispersion (ELD) elements.
This projector only has two HDMI inputs, but dual triggers and the same other inputs as the lower cost version. Noise is a bit lower at 24dB while power consumption rises to 490W.
Lens shift
VPLL-Z7013 (Bundled): Powered V ± 80%, H ± 31%
VPLL-Z7008 (Optional): Powered V ± 50%, H ± 18%
Throw ratio
VPLL-Z7013 (Bundled): 1.35 : 1 to 2.90 : 1
VPLL-Z7008 (Optional): 0.85 : 1 to 1.06 : 1
Pricing is $5499 for the VPL-VW290ES and $39,999 for the VPL-VW890ES.
What We Think
Surprisingly, Sony doesn’t detail the different colour coverage of these two projectors. I would have expected the difference to be highlighted in the specifications. (BR)
