What Display Daily thinks: Sustainability, energy conservation, and carbon footprints may trigger some people, but the reality is that most consumers are becoming more engaged with the implications of not addressing any of these issues. Just today, TCL CSOT has an announcement where the sustainability and conservation value of its displays takes a central role as it ships products to Samsung. You can’t be a global player if you don’t pay attention to the real concerns of consumers about energy use, even if it is just for the sake of saving money on energy bills at home.
So, this story below is interesting because it kind of addresses that issue, but it also highlights an interesting opportunity: in-home displays like this should be branded by a display manufacturer, closely aligning itself with energy conservation, and the consumers’ spending and sustainability needs. Brand your PR any way you want, but if you really want to make a splash with your bona fides in sustainability, brand a product like this.
Chameleon Ships 10 Millionth In-Home Display
Chameleon Technology, a smart energy technology business based in North Yorkshire, has achieved a significant milestone by manufacturing and delivering its 10 millionth in-home display (IHD), some sold under the brand name ivie. Chameleon is supporting the UK government’s 2050 Net Zero target by promoting energy efficiency in homes and reducing carbon emissions, with one in every three UK homes now equipped with the company’s IHDs.
The ivie Bud or Chameleon IHD are priced around £50 ($60) and available for anyone looking real-time energy usage data in a smartphone app. It’s supposed to help you understand your energy use and help you manage your services. Users have to check to make sure it is compatible with their smart meters, and once they’ve done that, it should be pretty easy to set up using your local WiFi connection. It is also a more consumer-friendly, and less sophisticated version of Chameleon’s IHD6 models.
Since issuing its first IHD in 2012, Chameleon now produces an average of 1.6 million IHD devices annually. The company believes that real-time energy data provided by IHDs plays a critical role in enabling low-carbon solutions, benefiting both the environment and consumers by reducing energy bills. Smart meters and integrated IHDs are integral components of a future energy system, according to the company’s CEO and co-founder, Mike Woodhall, which is essential for the UK to achieve its eco targets, reduce CO2 emissions, and move away from unsustainable energy sources.
Chameleon Technology has received over £3 million of innovation funding from the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). The funding supports the development of energy efficiency concepts and the trial of smart energy products designed to work harmoniously and build a decarbonized energy system for the UK. Looking ahead, Chameleon Technology remains focused on supplying more IHDs to households to support the UK’s environmental targets and achieve carbon neutrality. With a vision to produce the next 10 million IHDs, the company continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of energy consumption and environmental responsibility.
