Smart TV Viewing Time Surges, Dongles Decline

What They Say

Protocol Entertainment reported data from Conviva that showed that we have reached a tipping point in the use of streaming dongles. Global viewing using dongles declined by 2% in the year from Q4 2020 to Q4 2021. On the other hand, smartTV use increased by 37%. Consoles from Microsoft and Sony were both down, as were Amazon devices. AppleTV was also down 1%. However, Roku managed 12% growth and Android saw the most growth at +42%, although altogether Android TV and Chromecast were used for just 11.2% of viewing time. There were big regional differences, where Roku took 41%.

What We Think

It has taken a long time, but the promised dominance of SmartTV may have arrived! (BR)
