Smart glasses could arrive in 2022, but will still need a lot of work

What They Say

A writer at CNET, Scott Stein, wrote an interesting article about his experiences with smartglasses in 2021. He has tried devices from Lenovo, Nreal and Ray-Ban and despite being keen on the idea of smartglasses, he found that they were not practical. For example, he had special prescription lenses for the Ray-Ban Stories, but found that they have to be factory fitted. There are challenges for all the devices with that user’s eyesight (which he admits is unusual, but which is not rare).

What We Think

Just before the Christmas break, I also spotted an article that quoted Elon Musk and his scepticism on the idea of the ‘Metaverse’. I’m not wedded to the idea of the plutocracy where those with the most money are regarded as the most worthy, so try not to be too influenced by the adoration of Musk by his acolytes, but I did find some resonance with his point of view. Still, as he said, he must just be too old. Over Christmas, I found that the unifying theme for young family members (from 6 to 20) was that they all played Minecraft, and I struggle to see the attraction of that, so I’m probably ‘over the hill’ as far as the Metaverse is concerned.
